Your mindset will determine everything you are and everything you do. Ultimately your mindset will decide if you succeed or fail at whatever you decide to try accomplishing. These 5
powerful ways to develop a growth mindset will help you change your results in everything from health to sports to business and parenting kids or cats. The mindset you inhabit will determine your ability to do what it takes to get the results you want.
Seriously… it is that important
What is a mindset
A mindset is the sum of the way we think, our beliefs developed through life, our habits, how we
handle our emotions, our world view and how we see ourselves and others.
Mindset.com defines Mindset as a collection of beliefs and thoughts:
“Mind-sets are those collection of beliefs and thoughts that make up the mental attitude, inclination, habit or disposition that predetermines a person’s interpretations and responses to events, circumstances and situations.”
So, what is the difference between mindsets?
A growth mindset means that we can grow and develop our abilities through learning new things and through practice and hard work. It is a mentality that looks at failure and thinks, GREAT! I can check that off the list and move on to try another road towards the goal. In that image, failure is learning – and an important ingredient in all success recipes.
Did you know that
virtually all great people have had these qualities? There are two kinds of mindsets people entail:
- The ones that fail and rise again over and over, until they succeed. That is the folks with the growth mindset
- The ones that maybe try once only to give up. That is the ones with a fixed mindset. Let’s look into that …
A fixed mindset is a belief that our intelligence, personality, and abilities to accomplish greatness are static. They believe that talent alone, without hard work, is key to success. You got it or you don’t. Fixed mindset people will spend time documenting their intelligence instead of developing it. You have heard it all before:
- It is easy for you to make websites because you
are so creative
- It is easy for you to make extra money because
you can rent out apartments
- I only went to high school, so I can’t do that…
Believing that your qualities are set in stone will result in a stagnant life. Not to forget a stagnant career and stagnant relationships. Let’s face it – if we don’t develop ourselves continually, we will fall behind fast. The world is moving quickly and those who play the fixed mindset blame game will miss out on life’s possibilities.
5 powerful ways to develop a growth mindset
A growth mentality
assumes that we can change the way we look at things when that belief system does NOT serve us anymore. Here are 5 powerful ways to develop a growth mindset.
1. Think of failure as essential to succeed
All the great thinkers in history typically failed their way to success. The key is to learn from the mistakes and try another approach. Failure in this image is a necessity to succeed. We all know that being a genius requires hard work and a lot of trial and error. Einstein said this about failure:
Anyone who has never made a mistake has never tried anything new.
When Opera was fired from a TV station because she was “Not fit for TV” she said this:
“I was in for the greatest growing period of my adult life”
– Oprah Winfrey
Intelligent people enjoy the learning process and don’t mind when it continues beyond an expected time frame. Remember, the process is the learning – the failing and rising over and over is what makes you the person you need to be to succeed. Without failing you would not grow as a person. So, embrace the failures, and cherish the growth they teach you. It means you are on your way to greatness.
Also keep in mind that Learning fast isn’t the same as learning well, and learning well sometimes requires allowing time for mistakes. And, if someone says that you have room for improvement…DO NOT assume that it translates to you being a failure. Learn from it and move on towards your goal
2. Push beyond your limits
Listen; if you think you can or you think you can`t – you are correct. That is why you must push yourself beyond your believed limit. Never mind what you think you can – decide to DO IT, and you will. Make sure you know why you are doing it, and visualize yourself conquering that goal, feel what it will feel like, who you will tell and how they will react. Paint a vivid picture beyond your wildest dreams, in your mind, and visualize it every day. There is no limit to what you can do if you take action on your goals. A wise dreamer once said
If you can dream it you can do it – Walt Disney
He failed numerous times but always got back to his vivid dream. Most of the world has been to Disney World today, or it`s on their bucket list. He pushed beyond his limits and made it happen. So, reward yourself for taking action, not just for being smart. And remember, study`s show that students with extra strong determination are more likely to seek approval from themselves rather than from others. That is great news and means you prioritize learning and growth over approval from others.
3. Challenge yourself
Challenges are opportunities in disguise. Challenges are opportunities that propel you forward towards your goals and help you grow if you take a chance on yourself.
Whatever you consider a weakness in yourself – take it on and overcome it. It is only through acknowledging our imperfections we can improve ourselves. Only then can we relish opportunities for self-growth.
“Hardships often prepare ordinary people for an extraordinary destiny.” – Mr. Lewis
Don’t underestimate the power of being able to overcome obstacles. Are you feeling too comfortable in your current career? That may be an indication that it’s time to seek out new challenges. After all, the magic happens outside your comfort zone.
4. Choose to be a lifelong learner
While less successful people mostly read for entertainment, the most successful people read self-development books. Studies show that 85% of the most successful readers plow through two or more educational or self-development books a month.
Another study among leaders revealed that 30% of them considered a willingness to keep learning vital for an employee to succeed in their job.
You’ll never be done learning. To keep on top of your game you need to keep studying the subjects necessary for you to ace your work tasks. Growth-minded people also know how to
constantly create new goals to keep themselves stimulated and in learning mode. Learning how to be a good learner is essential to succeed at anything today.
And remember, there is no one-size-fits-all learning method. Try different tactics and find the ones you like best. I love Audiobooks when I go hiking. It fits perfect for my long hikes in weekends – and it gets me out every morning for a hike with a new chapter of a subject I`m working on. Perfect combo.
Some people learn best from Video, so webinars and you-tube videos are perfect learning platforms. Others like good-old-fashioned Books. I must admit I love the smell of books, and before Audiobooks arrived, I read the written word on paper.
5. Find a community of likeminded people
Finding a tribe of likeminded people can be the single most important thing you seek out in your life. It is not always wise to compare yourself to others, but it is important to realize that we are all made of the same stuff. Finding a community that can help you when you are stuck and keeps you accountable true your learning process can be the lifeline you need when the going gets tough.
Joining a group of growth-minded people will also allow you to share your knowledge to give back. That will make you feel good about yourself and make you learn even more. Be open and humble and leave the know-it-all personality behind and open up to saying; “I don’t know” or “can anybody give me a tip on how to handle…” You will be amazed at how much you learn from being a part of a group of go-getters.
In a group like this, you will also give and receive feedback. So, remember to portray constructive criticism as positive feedback and reflect on it – then see how you can improve. Growth-oriented people want to develop and challenge themselves. So value the feedback, it is a great way to learn more and grow your confidence.
I will be bold enough to say that your life will never be the same after joining a community of likeminded people. Remember that you are the average of the ten people you spend the most time with, so choose carefully. Being a part of a mastermind will propel you forward and a growth- mindset will become first… not second nature.
Afterword – the smart thing to do!
I know you feel it – there must be more to life. Maybe you are uncertain and afraid to explore the possibilities. What if you find that the world you always hoped to be a part of is actually there. People with the same dreams and worries. A tribe of like-minded souls searching for what life has to offer.
“The world is full of magic things, patiently waiting for our senses to grow sharper.”
― W.B. Yeats
I found and tested a system that gave me the tools the tribe and the mentors I needed to change my life. It has totally changed my life. It is never to late my friend – try it out – bet on yourself – take the leap
